As we live out this Justice Journey we’ve been preparing for in Vancouver, our time here at Rancho El Camino has been truly life-changing. Experiencing God in the simplicity of life at the Rancho has reshaped our perspective in ways we never expected.
When I say simplicity, I pause—because is "simple" really the right word? In many ways, the Rancho is anything but simple. This vibrant oasis is home to an equine therapy centre, a training program for equine therapy, a university exchange program, a high school completion initiative, riding lessons, physical therapy, school field trips, aquaponics, a garden café, a Kids Club program, disc golf, and more. Yet, amidst all this, Pete, Emily, and their team intentionally embrace a life of simplicity. They do so to ensure that their time, energy, and resources—physical, emotional, and spiritual—are wholly devoted to the children and youth they serve.
While Vancouverites spend a lot of time making ourselves comfortable and happy, the Rancho El Camino community steps into discomfort to serve the youth and children of the colonias be seen, loved and valued. We have learned a lot.
Our family is forever changed by this place—not just by its breathtaking beauty but by the hearts of those who serve here. They embody the words of Jesus in Mark 10:13-16: "Let the little children come to me; do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these."
The Smiths will never be the same after this Justice Journey. We are blessed, humbled, and transformed.
